Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) praised former President Donald Trump for bashing efforts to provide assistance to Ukraine in front of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
Trump joined House GOP lawmakers for a closed-door meeting on Thursday morning, marking his return to Capitol Hill for the first time since the January 6th, 2021 riot. He reportedly praised Johnson during the meeting and discussed key policy issues such as trade, abortion, and immigration.
According to Gaetz, Trump claimed the U.S. should be spending more money on “OUR TROOPS” instead of providing financial and military assistance to Ukraine amid the current war with Russia. The Florida lawmaker made sure to note on his post on X, formerly Twitter, that Trump made these remarks with Johnson present at the meeting.
Back in April, the House under the leadership of Johnson approved $95 billion in foreign aid to not only Ukraine but also Israel and other U.S. allies with bipartisan support. Hardline Republicans, including Gaetz and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) criticized Johnson for changing his stance on Ukraine.
Gaetz wrote on X on Thursday morning, “TRUMP ON UKRAINE: ‘They’re never going to be there for us.’ He says we should pay OUR TROOPS more instead of sending $60b to Ukraine. Trump trashing the Ukraine Aid to @SpeakerJohnson’s face is so epic.”

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee has often claimed that if he were still in the Oval Office that there would be no need to provide Ukraine with assistance because Russia would have not invaded its western neighbor.
