Newsmax Host Grills Hard Right Congressman About the GOP’s Shrinking Majority: ‘What’s Going On!?’
Newsmax host Rob Finnerty grilled Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), a former chair of the House Freedom Caucus, on Monday over the state of the Republican conference in the House.
Biggs pushed back against the conference being described as “chaotic” by critics despite Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) recent threat to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) from his position. Johnson has been publicly criticized by a number of House GOP members who did not support a $1.2 trillion spending package, passed last week just before a partial government shutdown would have kicked in.
“In the House, congressman, you think things are good for the Republican Party?” Finnerty asked Biggs as he painted a positive picture of House Republicans.
“I think that we get along better than most people would think,” Biggs said.
Finnerty then listed off Republicans who have “abandoned” Biggs in the House and shrunk the Republican majority to one.
“You understand why I’m asking, right? Kevin McCarthy abandoned you, Ken Buck abandoned you, and Mike Gallagher just announced on Friday that he’s going to resign on April the 13th. You’ve got a one-vote majority. What’s going on in the House?” Finnerty asked.
“Well, I don’t know why Kevin left, and I’m not sure I know why Ken and Mike are — Mike’s leaving, and Ken left. I don’t know why they’re leaving. I don’t think is because of necessarily the things going on in the House because all three of them knew we had a really thin majority anyways,” Biggs said. Buck, a member of the Freedom Caucus, has become a vocal critic of the MAGA wing of the House GOP.
In a later interview with Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), Finnerty called the small majority “really sad” and similarly grilled the Republican lawmaker over the state of the GOP conference.
“Your colleague, Mike Gallagher, just 40 years old, announced that he’s going to leave. He’s not going to serve the next 224 days until the end of his term. He’s going to abandon you just like Kevin McCarthy abandoned you. Ken Buck abandoned you, and you voted to oust George Santos. Your majority’s now one, which is really sad. What’s going on with the conference?” Finnerty asked.
Norman accused those retiring from their positions of “putting America at risk.”
“The people that are leaving us, they’re putting America at risk by doing that,” he said.
Norman, who said he would not support ousting Johnson, argued McCarthy left because he was “just mad” after being pushed out of the House Speaker position. The South Carolina congressman said he was also against ousting Santos, and he doesn’t understand the motivations of lawmakers like Gallagher.
“I don’t understand it and why would you put this country at risk?” he said.
