Republican Committee Chair Informs Marjorie Taylor Greene Her ‘Point of Order’ Is Off Base

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) appeared to irk Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) during a meeting of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday by using the word “deplorable.”

Greene raised a “point of order” that was shut down by the chair.

The lawmakers heard testimony in a hearing titled “The Importance of Protecting Female Athletics and Title IX,” which focused in large part on transgender women participating in women’s sports. At one point, Crockett singled out a witness from the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

“The Heritage Foundation loves Texas,” Crockett said, referring to her home state. “They always sending us some nonsense bills that somehow set this country on the wrong trajectory. They send them to Texas. They send them to Florida. Every deplorable state that we can think about, they usually coming out of y’all’s think tank.”

It appears Crockett misspoke by saying “Every deplorable state” instead of “Every deplorable bill.”

In any case, her use of the word “deplorable” in this context prompted Greene to interrupt.

“Point of order,” Greene said, requesting recognition from the chair. “Point of order. I move to strike her– I move to strike her words, ‘deplorable states.'”

“That’s not a point of order,” interjected Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the ranking member. “Let the gentlelady proceed.”

Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) who was temporarily filling in for the absent chairman, halted discussion. During the pause, Crockett could be heard laughing.

After conferring with aides, McClain rendered a decision.

“A ‘deplorable state’ is not a statement against a person,” she told Greene. “Or it is not engaging in personalities.”

McClain told Crockett, “So, I’ll continue and you reclaim your time.”

With that, Crockett resumed speaking.
