One of House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) aides reportedly urged Republican colleagues against subpoenaing former White House staffer Cassidy Hutchinson to prevent the release of “sexual texts from members who were trying to engage in sexual favors.”
According to a Washington Post report published on Thursday, Johnson’s aide “intervened” in June 2024 after Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), expressed interest in subpoenaing Hutchinson to testify over the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots.
“In a meeting following the June conversation, Johnson and senior aides also conveyed to Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Georgia) and members of his staff that issuing a subpoena to Hutchinson and asking her to testify under oath would serve as an opportunity for her to retell her story and potentially embarrass the Trump White House,” the Post reported, citing two unnamed sources present at the meeting.
Several Republicans reportedly “raised concerns” over the idea – specifically the potential release of “sexual texts from members who were trying to engage in sexual favors” with Hutchinson.
One of Johnson’s staffers also warned a subpoena could “potentially reveal” other “embarrassing information.”
Hutchinson served as an aide to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows during the first Trump administration. Following the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots, Hutchinson testified in front of the Jan. 6 Committee and went on to endorse Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
In her 2023 memoir Enough, Hutchinson accused former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani of groping her and spoke about her relationship with former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, who she denied dating.
“We did have an amicable working relationship and we were good friends at points,” she told MSNBC, adding, however, that she “never dated Matt Gaetz.”
“I have much higher standards in men. And Matt, frankly, is a very unserious politician,” Hutchinson concluded.
