New York City Mayor Eric Adams criticized Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott for his “cruel and inhumane” response to the migrant surge at the border.
Over the last year, in response to the recent surge of migrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border, Texas has begun bussing undocumented immigrants into large cities politically dominated by Democrats.
According to the Associated Press, Abbott has paid for bus tickets for approximately 42,000 migrants with over 15,000 being sent to New York City since the spring of 2022. On Wednesday afternoon, Adams took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to call out the Texas leader.
“We’ve begun to see another surge of migrants arriving. We expect this to intensify over the coming days as a result of Greg Abbott’s cruel and inhumane politics,” Adams wrote. “Just last week, 14 chartered buses with migrants arrived in one night, with hundreds more arriving every day.”

“Today, we’re proud to stand with Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston to do our part to confront this national crisis. But cities cannot continue to do the federal government’s job for them,” he added.
Earlier Wednesday, Johnson criticized the federal government for not providing enough resources for cities to deal with the migrant surge and called out Abbott for his response to the national issue.
Adams continued, “I also signed an executive order requiring private charter companies to give us at least 32 hours notice before arrival so we can coordinate a safe, responsible arrival for our brothers and sisters seeking asylum. We need federal and state help to resettle and support the remaining 68,000 migrants currently in our care and the thousands of individuals who continue to arrive every single week.”
“And we need Governor Abbott to stop playing games with innocent lives,” he concluded.
