‘They Can Do Much Better’: Trump Shreds National Prayer Service Over Message of Tolerance
President Donald Trump was asked by the White House press on Tuesday how he felt about the National Prayer Service earlier in the day, which made headlines for the bishop’s strong message of tolerance.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance listened to Bishop Mariann Budde’s sermon at Washington, DC’s National Cathedral during which she offered a “final plea” for compassion toward immigrants.
“They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues… I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away and that you help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome here. God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger,” said the bishop in her sermon, which quickly went viral online.
Back the White House reporters shouted to Trump, “Mr. President, what did you think of the sermon? What do you think of a sermon? What did you think of what did you think of the service?”
Trump replied, questioning, “What did you think? Do you like it? Did you find it exciting?”
“Not too exciting, was it? I didn’t think it was a good service. Thank you very much. They can do much better,” he added.
Many on the online right were quick to attack the bishop and her message:
