President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that the Coca-Cola Company had agreed to start using real cane sugar in Coca-Cola cans and bottles produced in the United States.
“I have been speaking to @CocaCola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so,” announced Trump in a Truth Social post. “I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!”
The White House shared Trump’s statement, along with an image that read, “Share a Coke with Trump.”
While the Coca-Cola Company did not explicitly confirm the news, a spokesperson for the company said, “We appreciate President Trump’s enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range will be shared soon.”
Coca-Cola used real sugar in the U.S. until the 1980s, when it was replaced with high-fructose corn syrup. The previous recipe – which is still used in other regions of the world, including Europe and Australia – is currently imported into the United States from Mexico.
President Trump reportedly consumes as many as 12 cans of Diet Coke a day and currently has a button on his White House Oval Office desk which, when pressed, summons a servant with a Diet Coke on a silver platter.
In January, Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey presented Trump with “the first ever Presidential Commemorative” bottle of Diet Coke.
Trump has also previously taken shots at the company, however.
In an October 2012 social media post, Trump wrote, “I have never seen a thin person drinking Diet Coke.”
Just a few days later, he added, “The Coca Cola company is not happy with me–that’s okay, I’ll still keep drinking that garbage.”
