An official Pentagon X account faced widespread mockery Friday after posting an AI-generated image of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who notably had only three fingers on one of his hands.

The image, seemingly intended to promote Hegseth’s control over the Defense Department, quickly drew attention for its glaring error.

X users were quick to highlight the mishap, with one commenting,  “Next level cringe that doesn’t actually accomplish anything.”

Friday evening, the DOD Rapid Response account shared an image of Hegseth standing in front of a trio of what appeared to be paramilitary drug slingers.

In an apparent nod the the US border, the image was captioned, “100% OPERATIONAL CONTROL.”

While the Pentagon likely sought to portray the military as in command of security at some parts of the country’s border with Mexico, Hegseth’s hand was missing the pinky.

The missing appendage stole the show and made the miltary account and the Pentagon head a target for jokes.

Some pointed out Hegseth was on the wrong side of the border fence, while others also noted an American flag in the image was missing crucial Stars and Stripes.

The image was thoroughly picked apart.

Here is a small sample of the reactions:

The botched image comes as Hegseth faces questions about his leadership at the Pentagon.

The former Fox News host and several top Trump administration cabinet members used the encrypted messaging app Signal for official discussions.

In recent weeks, multiple senior staff members who were hired by Hegseth have also left the Defense Department, leading to concerns about instability in the military.
