Trump Shanks Latest GOP Speaker Nominee Tom Emmer in Utterly Devastating Fashion
Well, the ongoing GOP Civil War just became much less civil.
Just 90 minutes after news broke that Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) had secured the Congressional Republicans’ third nomination to be the new Speaker of the House, former President Donald Trump dropped a political hammer on the already chaotic intra-party shit show.
Trump made clear in a social media post that “RINO Tom Emmer” doesn’t get his MAGA seal of approval, accusing the congressman of not being a “truly great Warrior” and someone who “never respected the Power of a Trump Endorsement, or the breadth and scope of MAGA—MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Perhaps even more damning to the MAGA set of House Republicans largely responsible for the lack of Speaker? Trump’s insistence that Emmer “actually spent more time defending Ilhan Omar, than he did [Trump].”
Rep. Omar is, of course, the prototypical Congressional villain in the eyes of Trump and his supporters, for reasons we will let the reader determine on their own.
The full text of Trump’s message that he posted on Truth Social:
I have many wonderful friends wanting to be Speaker of the House, and some are truly great Warriors. RINO Tom Emmer, who I do not know well, is not one of them. He never respected the Power of a Trump Endorsement, or the breadth and scope of MAGA—MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! He fought me all the way, and actually spent more time defending Ilhan Omar, than he did me—He is totally out-of-touch with Republican Voters. I believe he has now learned his lesson, because he is saying that he is Pro-Trump all the way, but who can ever be sure? Has he only changed because that’s what it takes to win? The Republican Party cannot take that chance, because that’s not where the America First Voters are. Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!
The House GOP is in an existential battle over its ideological lodestar. Trump’s endorsement of Jim Jordan was not enough to get the Ohio Republican extremist and election-denying firebrand the Speakership. Emmer actually voted to certify the election in 2020, which, in the eyes of Trump and many of his Congressional minions, may actually be disqualifying.
Given the high stakes of this particular round of Speaker votes, something has got to give. Either Tom Emmer’s intentions to become speaker will be dead on arrival, or we may see some cracks in the armor of Trump’s influence on House Republicans.
