‘Brilliant Guy’: Trump Anoints JD Vance as the ‘Most Likely’ Heir to MAGA Throne
President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House Tuesday that he thought Vice President JD Vance was “most likely” the heir apparent for his MAGA movement.
Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked the question, first making reference to the president’s stroll along the White House roof earlier in the day.
“Thank you very much, President Trump, nice to see you got off the roof alright,” said Doocy after Trump called on him.
“You said this morning, that you probably won’t be running for a 3rd term,” said Doocy. “This weekend, Secretary of State [Marco] Rubio said that he thought JD Vance would be a great nominee. You could clear the entire Republican field right now. Do you agree that the heir apparent to MAGA is JD Vance?”
“Well, I think most likely, in all fairness, he’s the vice president,” Trump replied. “And I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form. I also think we have incredible people — some of the people on the stage right here.
“So it’s too early, obviously, to talk about it,” Trump added. “But certainly he’s doing a great job and he would be probably favorite at this point.”
In February, Trump shrugged off questions from Doocy’s colleague Bret Baier asking if he wished to name Vance as his successor. More recently, in May, the president told NBC News’ Kristen Welker Vance “could very well be” at the top of the list, but also named Rubio as well.
“I don’t want to get involved in that, said Trump. “I think he’s a fantastic, brilliant guy. Marco is great. There’s a lot of them that are great. I also see tremendous unity, but certainly you would say that somebody’s the VP, if that person is outstanding, I guess that person would have an advantage. But I think the other people would all stay in unbelievably high positions. But, you know, it could be that he’d be challenged by somebody. We have a lot of good people in this party.”
