‘I’m Gonna Do It Whether the Women Like It or Not’: Trump Vows to Keep Saying Line Aides Told Him Not to Say
Former President Donald Trump said he will keep repeating one of his favorite campaign lines, aides’ advice be damned.
In rally after rally, he has claimed that he will protect women. Last month, for example, Trump addressed women in a particularly strange way.
“You will no longer be abandoned, lonely, or scared,” he said at the time. “You will no longer be in danger. You’re not going to be in danger any longer. You will no longer have anxiety from all of the problems our country has today. You will be protected, and I will be your protector. Women will be happy, healthy, confident, and free. You will no longer be thinking about abortion!”
Speaking at a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Wednesday night, Trump donned a fluorescent utility vest he wore earlier in the day while answering questions from a garbage truck. He said his campaign staff has urged him not to talk about women as he has been doing:
And my people told me about four weeks ago, I was saying, “No, I want to protect the people. I want to protect the women of our country. I want to protect the women.”
“Sir, please don’t say that.”
“Why?”
They said, “We think it’s, we think it’s very inappropriate for you to say.”
I said, “Why? I’m president. I want to protect the women of our country.”
They said [APPLAUSE], they said, “Sir, I just think it’s inappropriate for you to say.”
[I] pay these guys a lot of money. Can you believe it? And I said, “Well, I’m going to do it whether the women like it or not. I’ve gotta protect them. I’m gonna protect them from migrants coming in. I’m gonna protect them from foreign countries that wanna hit us with missiles and lots of other things.”
Trump saying “whether the women like it or not” is a questionable choice of words, considering that last year, a civil jury found him liable for sexually assaulting writer E. Jean Carroll in the mid-1990s. Just last week, former model Stacey Williams alleged Trump groped her breasts and buttocks. In all, 27 women have accused Trump of varying degrees of sexual misconduct. The former president denies wrongdoing.
Trump previously boasted of forcing himself on women in the infamous Access Hollywood tape.
“You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful—I just start kissing them,” he said. “It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.”
