Trump Extends 50% EU Tariff Deadline After ‘Good Call’ With Von der Leyen: ‘Was My Privilege To Do So’

President Donald Trump said Sunday that he has agreed to delaying the start date for his proposed 50% tariff on the European Union to July 9, after a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Trump spoke about the extension both to reporters on the tarmac and in a post on his Truth Social account, after Von der Leyen shared her reaction to what she called a “good call” with the president in a post on X.

Trump included a screenshot of that X post with his Truth comments. He emphasized both on air and online that the Commission called him, not the other way around.

“I received a call today from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline on the 50% Tariff with respect to Trade and the European Union,” he wrote. “I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025 — It was my privilege to do so. The Commission President said that talks will begin rapidly.”

To reporters on the tarmac, Trump said they expect to “rapidly get together” to try to work something out.

She just called me, as you know, and she asked for an extension on the June 1st date, and she said she wants to get down to serious negotiation, because — I’ve told you specifically, I mean I’ve told anybody that would listen, they have to do that. And we had a very nice call, and I agreed to move it. I believe June 9th would be — July 9th — would be the date. That was the date she requested. Could we move it from June 1 to July 9? And I agreed to do that and that — she said, we will rapidly get together and see if we can work something out.
