Ex-Donald Trump lawyer Michael Cohen said his former client belonged in a “cage” in a social media video that was quickly brought up on Tuesday when defense lawyer Todd Blanche began cross-examination in Trump’s hush money trial.
Cohen testified that he paid hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels on Trump’s behalf to conceal an alleged affair between the two. The former president is facing more than 30 felony counts. He’s denied any knowledge of hush money payments and that an affair ever occurred. Daniels also testified in the Manhattan courtroom last week.
Cohen was previously sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to campaign finance violations, fraud, and more.
During cross-examination, Blanche asked Cohen about past comments he’d made about Trump, including saying he belonged in a “fucking cage” like an “animal” in a TikTok video.
According to reporters inside the courtroom, Blanche hammered Cohen over comments he’s made both in media appearances and social media about the former president. He asked multiple times if Cohen had been directed to not speak publicly about the case by prosecutors, which did not need to be answered since objections were sustained by Judge Juan Merchan.
The video where Cohen said Trump belongs in a “cage” was from a series of TikTok livestreams, some of which Cohen has been releasing while the trial has been ongoing.
In this particular video, where people can donate to Cohen, the ex-lawyer described seeing Trump leave the Manhattan courtroom.
“He goes right into that little cage which is where he belongs in a fucking cage like an animal,” Cohen said.
Some legal analysts have raised alarms about Cohen’s frequent presence on media and social media, potentially creating weaknesses for the case and openings for Trump’s defense team.
Cohen later claimed he does his TikTok livestreams “to build an audience, to create a community” and to “vent.”
He said the videos make money, but not a significant amount.
Cohen also acknowledged Trump was mentioned on every episode of his podcast Mea Culpa and admitted to some past praise of his boss, including calling Art of the Deal an “excellent” book.
Blanche also brought up Cohen targeting him on his TikTok streams, telling him he’d referred to him as a “crying little shit.”
“That sounds like something I would say,” Cohen said before the prosecution objected and it was sustained.
