World Leaders Are Reaching Out to Donald Trump Following His Victory

Last night, Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States in one of the biggest political upsets in our nation’s history. World leaders reached out to Trump on Twitter to congratulate him on his victory, starting with none other than Vladimir Putin.

In his letter, Putin says he hopes “or joint work to restore Russian-American relations from their state of crisis, and also to address pressing international issues and search for effective responses to challenges concerning global security.”

Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, and Jean-Claude Juncker, Commission Chief say they want to continue to “work together to ensure peace and prosperity for our citizens and for people around the world.” They also invited him for an EU-US summit at his “earliest convenience.”

NATO chief Jen Stoltenberg looks forward to having Trump at next year’s NATO summit in Brussels.

Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar sent well-wishes to both Trump and the future first lady Melania Trump, who was born in Slovenia.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May sent her best, saying “Britain and the United States have an enduring and special relationship based on the values of freedom, democracy and enterprise. We are, and will remain, strong and close partners on trade, security and defence.”

Not everyone was so congratulatory and hopeful. According to Reuters, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she will “rk closely with the future President of the United States Donald Trump,” but she is cautious.

Former Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt issued an ominous Tweet.

French President François Hollande also expressed concern, calling the future “uncertain.”
