Colin Cowherd Rips Aaron Rodgers for Teasing Unrealistic Return From Achilles Tear All Season: ‘PR Grift From Day One’

FS1 commentator Colin Cowherd pulled no punches in his scathing criticism of Aaron Rodgers now that it is confirmed he won’t be returning from a torn Achilles this season.

After suffering the injury in his Jets debut, Rodgers underwent an experimental procedure with the hopes of returning later on in the season. Historically, the Achilles tear has been a season-ending injury; but Rodgers intended on pulling off an unprecedented return.

Not long after the surgery, Rodgers had already ditched his crutches and seemed to be recovering at a rapid pace. Then, he began taking practice throws and dropbacks before game. In late November, Rodgers actually returned to practice.

This week, however, Rodgers and the team essentially confirmed his season is over. On The Pat McAfee Show, the QB said he felt several weeks away from making a realistic push to return. With just three weeks left in the regular season — and the Jets mathematically eliminated from playoff contention — that means Rodgers won’t see the field again until 2024.

Despite this, the Jets decided to activate Rodgers from the Injured Reserve list and place him back on the roster.

On Wednesday’s episode of The Herd, Cowherd called Rodgers out for what he called a “PR grift from day one.”

“So, if you can’t win games, let’s try to win PR,” Cowherd said. “Just the silly circus continues. He’s been on the sidelines on the headset. He’s traveling with the team; he’s on the sidelines; he’s at practice. We see him throwing the ball around. But now it’s official. He’s been activated on the Jets roster because he’s ‘so good around the team.’ Really? I’ve watched you play. He ain’t that good.”

Cowherd then compared the attention Rodgers has received to the attention surrounding Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins, who suffered the same injury.

“You know who else tore his Achilles? Kirk Cousins, and you haven’t heard a word,” Cowherd said. “Because Kirk Cousins doesn’t need 24/7 validation and attention, updates on a weekly basis. (He) doesn’t need to play a game with PR. Kirk Cousins, who’s very secure with himself, happily married, beautiful family, end of a cul-de-sac, dogs. Life doesn’t revolve around Kirk Cousins.”

Cowherd called the situation an “absolute circus” and maintained that Rodgers never even had a chance to play. He topped it off with even more personal digs at the QB.

“But Aaron wanted us to believe he had some access to some medical information — probably on some wacko conspiracy theory Reddit board,” Cowherd continued. “And he does this a lot. He wants you to think he reads stuff that you don’t read, and sees stuff that you don’t see, and has sources and access that you don’t have, and it’s all this stuff that the ‘mere mortals’ don’t have at their fingertips. But Aaron does!

“No, bro. You were never gonna play when you were hurt. Ever.”
