Golfer Breaks Down in Highly Emotional CBS Interview After Fellow Player’s Sudden, Tragic Death at the Age of 30
PGA Tour golfer Peter Malnati gave an emotional interview to CBS Saturday following the sudden, tragic death of fellow player Grayson Murray at the age of 30.
Malnati played with Murray on Friday — just hours before his passing at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. Murray abruptly withdrew from the tournament following the 16th hole Friday, citing illness. The cause of death has not yet been revealed.
Murray had been open about his issues with depression and alcohol abuse. Malanti — in a heart wrenching interview with CBS’ Amanda Balionis on Saturday — alluded to Murray’s struggles.
“I don’t even know Grayson all that well, but I spent the last two days with him. And it’s so funny. We get so worked up out here about a bad break here or a good break there. We’re so competitive. It’s so competitive out here. We all want to beat each other.
“And then something like this happens and you realize we’re all just humans.. It’s a really hard day, because you look at Grayson and you see in him someone who has visibly, outwardly struggled in the past. And he’s been open about it. And you see him kind of get his life back to a place where he’s been good about things. And he’s playing great. His game is so good. He’s so good at golf.”
Malnati went on to share an anecdote about how Jerry Haas, coach of the renowned Wake Forest men’s golf team, considered Murray the greatest player he’d ever worked with.
“It’s a huge loss for our fans,” Malnati said. He added, “You realize that as much as we want to beat each other, as much as you want to be competitive, we really are one big family. And we lost one today, and that’s terrible.”
