‘Uh… Referee!’ Rory McIlroy’s Golf Shot Lands Right in a Spectator’s Lap During Tournament
Golf star Rory McIlroy found himself in a rare conundrum on Thursday when his golf shot ended up right in a spectator’s lap.
The awkward moment came after McIlroy’s tee shot on the 13th hole of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. The woman, sitting with his legs crossed on the grass, simply sat still as she and others around her laughed at the ordeal.
McIlroy jokingly got into position to take the shot off her laugh before backing off and pleading for help.
“Uh… referee!” he said while looking toward an official.
The woman, still sitting on the grass, waited patiently for the chief referee to arrive. When he did, he offered a much more reasonable solution to the dilemma.
“Would you like to pass him the ball as opposed to…?” the referee said, prompting the woman to do just that.
The referee confirmed with her where the ball was in relation to the ground and excused her from the scene. She then joined the crowd in watching McIlroy prepare for his next shot, which he chipped back onto the green.
It’s not uncommon for fans to be hit by golf balls. In most cases, players will simply play the ball where it lands after it bounces off them. It is uncommon, however, for the ball to come to a rest on the fan.
