Former President Donald Trump said he “would absolutely” rehire his former economic adviser Peter Navarro if he is re-elected to the White House in November.

Navarro is currently serving a four-month sentence in a federal prison for refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena regarding the January 6th Capitol attack. He is two months into his prison sentence after arriving back in March.

However, Navarro recently told the Wall Street Journal he does not want a pardon from Trump if he is re-elected. Instead, the former White House adviser believes the Supreme Court will release him while he challenges his DC conviction.

Regardless, when asked by the WSJ if he would rehire the convicted federal inmate, Trump stood by his former White House aide.

“I would absolutely have Peter back. This outrageous behavior by the Democrats should not have happened,” Trump said in a statement to the paper.

Despite Navarro’s claim the highest court will set him free, the Supreme Court has denied his request to be released from prison twice. The 74-year-old inmate says he has “no regrets” claiming he “didn’t choose this fight, the fight chose me.”

“I will not give the Supreme Court any excuse to duck what is otherwise a landmark constitutional case regarding the separation of power and executive privilege,” Navarro wrote to the WSJ in an email from his Miami prison.

Last year, a DC jury convicted Navarro on two counts of contempt of Congress for failing to produce documents related to the Capitol attack and for refusing to comply with a deposition by a House select committee. Navarro played a key role in Trump’s efforts to retain power following his loss in the 2020 presidential election, which he detailed to MSNBC’s Ari Melber.
