Anderson Cooper Grills Booker on Whether GOP Cleared His Release of Kavanaugh Documents in Advance

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) made waves Thursday with his release of a series of previously confidential documents regarding Judge Brett Kavanaugh, stating he was ready to sacrifice his position over it, but the GOP claims it was all for show.

In an interview that evening with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Booker attempted to clear up the matter, pushing back on the narrative of Republicans.

As Cooper noted, despite the senator’s apparent willingness to risk his job for the document dump, which pertain to race-related matters including affirmative action and school busing, the GOP is now stating the move was approved before 4 a.m. that day. Party members are also calling it a play for a presidential run in 2020.

However, Booker pushed back on that story, recalling that Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) had initially threatened him with expulsion.

“I’ve already released over 20 committee confidential documents in violation of what they say are the Senate rules in which Cornyn said I should be expelled for,” he added. “So according to Cornyn’s rules, it’s a lot of talk, a lot of bluster right now. I am breaking the rules. But I was raised and taught that an unjust law, you almost have an obligation to stand against it. So I am violating those laws.”

Booker said he’d continue to release documents, as he has throughout Thursday on Twitter, believing the information should be brought into to public sphere so that Americans can judge Kavanaugh appropriately as he moves toward a confirmation to sit on the Supreme Court.

But Cooper continued grilling Booker on when the release of the documents was allowed, again noting there was an approval made early that morning.

Booker argued he had already violated the rules on Wednesday when he mentioned an email from Kavanaugh discussing racial profiling.

“Last night I broke the rules…then they scrambled to release the document,” he said. “But I continue to release documents. I’ve released 20 so far that they have not cleared. I am breaking the rules. I am breaking the sham rules.”

Booker clarified that “when I broke the committee rules last night, those documents had not been cleared.”
