Bill Maher: People Mad at Me for Take on ‘Dumb F*cking’ Comic Book Culture Proved My Point

Bill Maher caused a stir over the weekend with a condescending take on comic book culture following the death of Marvel legend Stan Lee.

To recap: Maher tried linking comic book culture to the rise of Trump and remarked upon how strange he finds it that “a man who inspired millions to, I don’t know, watch a movie, I guess” would be mourned to such a large degree.

He said comic books are just kids stuff and adults are wasting time clinging to it as adults.

Doling out this particular take days after Lee’s death earned Maher a lot of criticism (with people pointing out Maher cameoed in Iron Man 3), but in an interview with Larry King he dismissively said people are just proving his point.

“I’m so glad that I don’t follow social media like that, every stupid thing that people lose their shit about,” he told king. “But talk about making my point for me.”

Maher said he doesn’t know much about Stan Lee and wasn’t swiping at him personally:

“What I was saying is a culture that thinks that comic books and comic book movies are profound meditations on the human condition is a dumb fucking culture. And for people to like get mad at that just proves my point.”
