Chris Matthews Speculates Roger Ailes Will Hire Rep. Weiner For Fox To Play The ‘Typical Liberal’
Chris Matthews was baffled by today’s “circus” involving Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner and his resignation announcement. At first Matthews seemed unsure why Weiner needed to subject himself to another press conference with reporters when he could have just quietly submitted a letter of resignation? Yet later in the segment Matthews seemed to realize that Weiner needed a moment in the spotlight to deliver his “I shall return speech.”
Eugene Robinson was less sure than Matthews that Weiner could make a political comeback later in life, since Weiner’s photographs will never disappear. However, Robinson was confident that Weiner could find work in the future on television commenting on politics. Matthews joked “you’re so generous to our profession” and amused himself even more, thinking that Roger Ailes might want to hire Weiner as a commentator for Fox News so that Ailes could then convince Fox viewers that Weiner is emblematic of all Democrats with “all the lifestyle qualities of a typical liberal.” Ben Smith hinted that he asked Fox about that possibility and someone there mentioned he should talk to CNN.
Matthews remained optimistic about Weiner’s future though, saying “I think he ought to take a crack at [running for office again], if he cleans up this mess – he’s got talent.” And despite the “crazy press conference,” Matthews predicted “this isn’t a good-bye” from Weiner.
