Chuck Todd said on Tuesday’s MTP Daily that the joint press conference with President Donald Trump and Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro “left me a bit speechless.”
“What we watched this afternoon,” he said, “was an American president teaming up with a world leader to do the following: attack the free press, attack his potential campaign opponents, and attack social media companies with a hard-right conspiracy theory.”
Bolsonaro knocked “fake news” during the press conference, and Trump praised him for doing so.
Todd said the presser was a display of how Trump’s “authoritarian, transactional impulses” and attacks on “democratic norms” are being exported around the world:
“The president has united with authoritarian leaders of sorts all around the world while downplaying or overlooking some of the worst human rights abuses, whether it’s praising the leader of the Philippines for executing suspected drug dealers, saying Kim Jong Un wasn’t to blame for Otto Warmbier’s death, downplaying Putin’s reported killing of journalists, dismissing the Saudi crown prince’s role in the Khashoggi murder, or largely overlooking Chinese President Xi’s record on re-educating Muslims, millions of them.”
Todd even said when he went to his panel that Trump and Bolsonaro seemed “linked arm-in-arm in probably the most un-American way we’ve seen.”
