Cindy McCain: I’ll Never Get Over Trump’s Attacks on Husband

Cindy McCain, widow of Senator John McCain (R-AZ), said she doesn’t think she’ll ever get over President Donald Trump‘s verbal attacks on her husband’s service.

McCain spoke to BBC about the political legacy the senator left behind with his passing and lamented that bipartisanship and civil debate — two of the senator’s hallmarks — seem to be gone from America. This led to a conversation about how Trump was absent from McCain’s funeral as the nation mourned his death earlier this year.

“Even though it was a very public funeral, we are still a family. For all of us, and for the sake of my own children, I didn’t want any disruption…It was important to me that we kept it respectful and calm and not politicized.”

Trump’s relationship with John McCain was fraught with tension for years before the latter’s death. Trump dismissed the idea that McCain was a hero for being a prisoner of war in Vietnam, repeatedly slammed McCain for his fatal vote against the “skinny repeal” of the Affordable Care Act, and has been very reluctant to acknowledge the senator’s legacy.

When McCain’s wife was asked if she’ll vote for Trump in 2020, she floated the idea that Trump might not even pursue re-election

“I don’t even know if he’s going to run,” she said. “I can’t answer that right now.”

As McCain condemned the president’s “hurtful” rhetoric and expressed hope that it eventually softens, she signaled that the slams on her husband are beyond forgiveness.

“I thought it was inappropriate and wrong, it hurt the family too, and it hurt the men who served with John,” she said. “I think that was a wrong thing to say. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it, to be honest.”

Cindy McCain’s words echo those of her daughter and co-host of The View, Meghan McCain, who said she’ll never forgive Trump’s insults to her dad.
