‘Clearly They’re Not Backing the Blue’: Brian Sicknick’s Mother and Partner Call Out Republicans for Blocking 1/6 Commission

The mother and partner of fallen Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick appeared on CNN Friday to criticize the Republican senators who blocked the 1/6 commission.

Gladys Sicknick and Sandra Garza met with GOP senators this week to push for them to support the commission, but the majority of Republicans Friday voted against a procedural measure on its creation.

Garza told Jake Tapper she was feeling hopeful, but the end result “speaks volumes to how they really feel.”

Sicknick’s mother said she was “disappointed” but not surprised, based on the feeling she had from their meetings.

“They went through their motions, but you can tell that, you know, underneath they were being nice to us,” she said.

At one point Tapper brought up rhetoric about “backing the blue” from Republican politicians who opposed the commission.

“Clearly they’re not backing the blue,” Garza said. “It’s not protecting law enforcement. And more importantly, it’s not protecting our democracy… It’s just unbelievable to me that they could do nothing about this.”

Sicknick said these members of Congress “would think very differently” if they had a child that was killed or hurt that day.

“Apparently they just think, ‘Well, we’re safe because of the men in blue.’ They don’t think any further from that,” she added.
