CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Challenges White House Explanation On Biden’s ‘Garbage’ Remark: ‘Listen To It For Yourself’
CNN host Kaitlan Collins expressed skepticism over the White House’s defense that President Joe Biden’s comment, which MAGA supporters claim labeled former President Donald Trump’s supporters as “garbage,” was taken out of context.
During a Zoom call with Latino leaders, President Biden stumbled over a few words while responding to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s Sunday remarks at a Trump rally in Madison Square Garden, where Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”
And just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” Well, let me tell you something. I don’t– I– I don’t know the Puerto Rican that– that I know– or a Puerto Rico, where I’m from– in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honorable people.
The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters– his– his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.
In reaction, Biden issued a denial and the White House, seeking to quell the backlash, released a transcript that recorded the word “supporter’s” – implying that Biden was referring to Hinchcliffe’s Puerto Rico remark and not all Trump supporters.
Collins was interviewing Pennsylvanian Governor Josh Shapiro as the incident unfolded and sought his reaction to Biden’s comments “where it sounds like he’s calling Trump’s supporters they are garbage.”
Shapiro responded with his “fresh reaction” by saying that he would “never insult” any Americans “even if they chose to support a candidate that [he] didn’t support.” Shapiro then pointed to Trump’s refusal to apologize for Hinchcliffe’s remarks and argued that Trump’s rhetoric “divided people.”
Reacting to the White House grammatical dodge, the host added that it was “hard to really look at” when anyone could “listen to it for clip yourself.”
The White House is trying to say that what President Biden was saying there, putting an apostrophe there, and supporters saying it’s the singular. I guess, referring to the comedian ‘that supporter’s comments.’ I mean, it’s hard to really look at that when you can listen to it for yourself.
