Cummings to Issa on His Last Day: ‘You’ve Made Me a Better Person’

Rarely does a Democrat effusively praise a Republican in Congress these days, which made a heartfelt speech by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) to Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) all the more surprising.

Today is Rep. Issa’s last hearing as the chair of the Oversight Committee, and Rep. Cummings took a moment to thank him for his service — even joking that the Chairman was “hung” during a portrait hanging ceremony — before he turned to the task of ruthlessly pillorying Jonathan Gruber.

“I want to thank you,” he said. “As you said moments ago, we have taken this journey together. And it has been a great journey.

“I believe that everybody who comes along your path, comes along your path to make you better,” Rep. Cummings continued, praising Issa’s devotion to researching issues and practically becoming an expert on every subject he investigated. “I will tell you, Mr. Chairman, you have made me a better person in so many, many ways. And so I want to thank you.”
