Dem Rep. Cummings Rails Against Secret Service: ‘Something Is Awfully Wrong’
The House Oversight Committee opened its hearing Tuesday on recent White House security breaches that have raised raised questions about the competence of the Secret Service.
“This is not a Democratic issue. This is not a Republican issue,” said Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), who sits on the committee. “This is an American issue. This is also an issue of national security.”
Cummings also said reports that personnel in the agency have held back in raising security concerns to their superiors show critical shortcomings in the Secret Service. “Something is awfully wrong with that picture,” he said.
It was reported this week that a White House gate jumper made his way further into the residence than was previously believed nearly two weeks ago. The man was carrying a knife when finally apprehended and had previously been arrested.
Commitee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said the series of security breaches raise questions on the possible decline in culture and morale at of the Secret Service.
