‘Enough!’ Hillary Clinton Calls For ‘Backlash’ Against ‘Extremists’ In House GOP After McCarthy’s Ouster

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanded the hard-rightwing “extremists” in the House GOP face backlash from the next speaker following Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) ouster from leadership.

A group of eight Republicans sided with House Democrats on Tuesday in the vote to oust McCarthy as speaker. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) spearheaded the vote after Congress avoided a government shutdown over the weekend.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) are the main GOP contenders to take over the speakership. CNN’s Christiane Amanpour asked Clinton for her thoughts on Jordan potentially becoming speaker. The conservative Ohio lawmaker led the charge against Clinton over the Benghazi scandal years ago.

“He is one of the principal ringleaders of the circus that’s been created in the Republican Party for the last several years,” Clinton responded. “I have no inside knowledge about what the Republicans will do, who they will end up voting for. But when do they put the country first?”

She added, “They do not represent a majority of even the Republican Party. When you look at the extremists in the House, they certainly don’t represent a majority of the country,” she added. “Somebody has to stand up and say, ‘Enough!’

“At some point, there needs to be a backlash against the control that this small group of extremists have. And I don’t know who will lead that, but let’s hope whoever becomes the new speaker will,” Clinton concluded.
