Marc Thiessen made the wild claim that the U.S. media has been biased in favor of Hamas, which on Oct. 7, carried out terrorist attacks on Israel that killed 1,200 people.
Since that time, Israel has launched attacks on Hamas-controlled Gaza, killing thousands. Gaza’s Ministry of Health claims more than 11,000 residents of the densely populated territory have been killed. Israel disputes this number, but has so far declined to give official estimates of civilian casualties.
Thiessen appeared on Friday’s Special Report on Fox News and declared, “There’s no apartheid, either in Israel or in Gaza.”
“Gaza has been governed by the elected leaders of the Palestinian people who chose Hamas to be their leaders,” he said, referring to the 2006 elections in which Hamas won 44% of the vote in what was the most recent election in Gaza. “And their elected leaders decided to launch an attack on Israel on October 7th and slaughter 1,400 innocent people, and Israel’s now responding.”
He then accused the media of favoring Hamas:
So, you know, the idea that somehow the media has been biased in Israel’s favor is kind of laughable. This is, if anything, the opposite. They’ve been taking Hamas propaganda about casualties and other things like that, and Israel needs to go– if want to have peace in this region, we got to– they’ve got to destroy Hamas.
Host Bret Baier asked Democratic strategist Leslie Marshall for her reaction.
“I don’t know if the word ‘apartheid’ is appropriate, but definitely, when you control the comings and going of another individual, an entire population– you talk about voting. Let’s look at the statistics. Statistically, less than half the population [is] of voting age. Less than half of that voted. Less than half of that voted for Hamas. They actually didn’t even win the election. They just took power. Water, electricity, supplied by Israel.”
Marshall then cited Palestinian casualty numbers.
“Because of who? Because of who?” Theissen interrupted.
“Those children are not being bombed by Hamas,” she responded.
“They’re being bombed because Hamas is keeping them as human shields, Leslie,” he said.
