Fox’s Trey Gowdy Savages Trump’s ‘Dumbfounding’ Gaetz Nomination: ‘A Corrupt Person’

Fox News weekend host Trey Gowdy went scorched earth on former Rep. Matt Gaetz, whom President-elect Donald Trump nominated as attorney general on Wednesday.

Gaetz resigned from the House – effective immediately – just hours after the announcement. The move came two days before the House Ethics Committee was scheduled to vote on whether to release a “highly damaging” report on Gaetz, who was alleged to have had sex with a minor and engaged in illicit drug use. The former lawmaker denies wrongdoing. A Department of Justice probe into Gaetz ended last year without any charges being filed.

At least two Republicans have signaled opposition to the nomination in the Senate, where Republicans will have 52 or 53 seats, depending on a recount in Pennsylvania.

Appearing on Friday’s Special Report on Fox News, Gowdy praised most of Trump’s nominees, but said Gaetz is beyond the pale.

“The overwhelming majority of his picks will sail through because they were grand slam picks,” he said. “But… you don’t root out corruption at the Department of Justice by picking a corrupt person to lead it. So, Matt Gaetz, either the report comes out and he’s not gonna be the attorney general, or the report doesn’t come out and he’s not gonna be the attorney general.”

Gowdy rattled off several other nominees and rued, “Nobody’s talking about those right now. They’re talking about this wildcard pick of someone who had to get out of the House to avoid being sanctioned by the House Ethics Committee. That dumbfounding pick is just sucking the oxygen out of all the good ones he made.”
