Fumble! Trump Coughs Up Bogus Info About Patrick Mahomes

President Donald Trump spoke at the White House after signing an executive order blocking funding for schools that allow transgender women to compete in women’s sports. While doing so, he flubbed a bit of trivia about one of the NFL’s biggest stars.

Trump acknowledged various Republican lawmakers on hand, including Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), a former college football coach. While recognizing Tuberville at the signing, the president misidentified the senator as a former coach of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who played college ball at Texas Tech.

“Tommy Tuberville, a great coach,” Trump said. “You know, his quarterback was named Mahomes. He was a great college coach. And I said, ‘How good was he?’ He said, ‘You don’t wanna know how good. He made me into a great coach. He’s a pretty good quarterback, right?’ Yeah, he was very good. He’s a good guy too.”

While Tuberville was the head coach of Texas Tech from 2010 to 2012, his tenure was over before Mahomes arrived in 2014. Moreover, during an appearance on Newsmax last year, the senator could not come up with Mahomes’ name while making a Super Bowl prediction.

“Well, San Francisco’s got the best defense. Obviously, the best quarterback is gonna be on the side of… the uhh… Kansas City Chiefs,” Tuberville said after a lengthy pause. “But they got a running back in San Francisco is pretty dang good.”

Before getting to Tuberville, Trump spoke about Oklahoma and once again falsely claimed he was the first Republican to win all 77 counties in the state. In fact, every Republican presidential candidate dating back to 2004 has swept the states’ counties.
