GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz Non-Ironically Calls Russia Investigation the ‘Next Benghazi’
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said Friday, non-ironically, that the Russia investigation, as seen through the lens of right-leaning media, could become the “next Benghazi.”
It happened on Fox News, during Outnumbered Overtime. Gaetz and host Harris Faulkner were discussing the pending Democratic response memo countering the one released by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) last week.
The conversation turned to, as expected, the Christopher Steele dossier.
“Here you have a circumstance where Democrats weren’t just paying for the dossier, they were actually telling Christopher Steele and telling others what facts they wanted to included in the dossier,” he said.
“My fear is that this could become the next Benghazi, where Congress finds a bunch of bad facts and exposes them, but then no one faces any consequences. That’s why dozens of Republicans, and me, have called for a second special counsel.”
The congressman also noted that President Donald Trump will probably release the response memo “today or tomorrow,” but saying that unless the memo, particularly its footnotes, receive some form of redaction it “could put American lives in jeopardy.”
This is far from the first time Gaetz, who brought an alleged holocaust denier to the State of the Union address, has said something nutty on cable television. Recently, he described Haiti as “sheet metal and garbage.”
