Hallie Jackson Grills Matt Schlapp On Porter Scandal: Is Your Wife ‘Comfortable’ Working in WH?
MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson got very direct on Friday when she grilled American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp about Rob Porter‘s domestic violence scandal.
Porter’s alleged abuse has created a new firestorm of controversy for the White House — particularly because Chief of Staff John Kelly defended Porter despite being previously aware of what he is being accused of. Schlapp fielded numerous questions about this when he appeared on MSNBC Live, and the conversation eventually focused Schlapp’s wife Mercedes who works for the Trump Administration.
“Is she comfortable working in this West Wing?” Jackson asked.
Mercedes Schlapp been White House Director of Strategic Communications for several months now, and she frequently gives media interviews to support the president’s agenda. Schlapp responded without hesitation that his wife is “completely” comfortable with her job.
Instead of expanding on that reply, Schlapp promptly pivoted and lauded Trump for his conservative policies.
“That’s why people like my wife are so proud to be a part of this,” Schlapp said. “There are times when it’s chaotic. There’s a lot of turbulence. There’s a lot of times when I scratch my head and say why didn’t they do things this way…But don’t doubt a lot of Americans are looking at Donald Trump himself as a person and the agenda and are cheering loud.”
During other parts of the interview, Jackson asked Schlapp what he thought about Kelly’s judgment in defending Porter and giving him the level of responsibility he had without proper security clearance. Schlapp said Kelly shouldn’t leave his position over the Porter matter, which prompted a spirited discussion about how Trump Administration is a lightning rod of political scandal.
