’Is He Fit or Isn’t He?!’ Christie Corners DeSantis With Question About Trump
Republican presidential candidates Chris Christie and Ron DeSantis threw down at the NewsNation Republican primary debate when the former New Jersey governor demanded that the Florida governor say whether he believes Donald Trump is fit to be president again.
The second half of the debate began with questions about the Republican party frontrunner, who was once again absent from the contest. Christie used his time to slam Trump over his numerous federal indictments, and he blasted his rival candidates for refusing to join him in his strident criticism of the former president.
When moderator Elizabeth Vargas asked DeSantis if he still thinks Trump is mentally fit to be president, he answered, “Father Time is undefeated. The idea we’re going to put someone up there that’s almost 80 and there is going to be no effects from that, we all know that’s not true.”
“Do you think he’s mentally fit?” Vargas asked again, but DeSantis gave another long-winded deflection instead.
When he concluded, Christie interjected to ask, “Why doesn’t he just answer the question? The answer was very direct: is he fit to be president or isn’t he?… If we were in a courtroom, they’d strike the answer.”
“No they wouldn’t,” DeSantis protested, but Christie continued to call him out.
“Is he fit or isn’t he?!” Christie demanded. The two proceeded to talk over each other while the moderators scolded them and tried to get the conversation back under control.
When DeSantis was again asked about Trump’s fitness, he kept going with his talking point, prompting Christie to snark, “He won’t answer.”
“He’s afraid to answer,” Christie exclaimed. “Either you’re afraid or you’re not listening. Here’s a simple question!”
Christie concluded by calling out his rivals for being “afraid to offend Donald Trump.”
