Lindsey Graham Warns Matt Gaetz’s Push to Oust McCarthy ‘Would Be a Disaster’ for GOP

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) warned it would be a “disaster” for the Republican Party if there is an attempt to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

CBS’ Margaret Brennan interviewed Graham on Sunday for Face The Nation, where the senator faced questions about the future funding of U.S. aid to Ukraine after the government narrowly avoided a shutdown. As Graham spoke optimistically about funding Ukrainian aid and other projects, he gave McCarthy his vote of confidence even as the speaker is about to face a mutiny from House’s far-right Republican caucus.

I think Kevin is the right guy at the right time. The only way he loses his job is if a handful of Republicans join up with the Democratic party to fire him. That would be a disaster for the future of the Republican party. But that’s not going to happen. Kevin has the overwhelming confidence of his membership, he worked to avoid a shutdown. He will fund Ukraine, but he’s telling everybody in the country, including me, you better send something over for the border for me to help Ukraine, and he’s right to make that demand.

Graham’s comments came as Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) declared that in the next few days, he will initiate a motion to vacate McCarthy as speaker. Minutes before the Graham interview, Brennan spoke to McCarthy — who dismissed Gaetz’s promised revolt against his leadership.
