Matthews: Who’s the GOP Gonna Blame If They Get Debate Demands and Still Lose?
Chris Matthews ended his show tonight wondering who exactly the GOP is going to blame for defeat if, along the way, they get everything they’ve been demanding.
He reiterated his belief that the GOP is trying to “stop people from voting” if they’re in a group that may end up voting for the Democratic candidate. He connected that to how the GOP is trying to exert more control over the debate process, especially with a letter featuring a set of demands laid out by many of the campaigns.
The goal here, Matthews said, is that they don’t want “uncomfortable questions” like whether they believe in evolution.
He brought up the suggestion that conservative radio hosts moderate debates before throwing this out there:
“What happens when you have only the voters you want voting––white, middle-aged, and minimally well-off––when you have debates run only by the party itself, all topics safely predictable, and even having the questions all coming from people guaranteed to have opinions on the outside rail of Republican thinking––who do you blame defeat on then?”
