On Morning Joe, the topic for discussion was the budget plan put forth by Republican Congressman Paul Ryan and the upcoming alternative proposal from President Obama. Joe Scarborough said the real problem are middle-class entitlements that politicians will never actually tinker with, since they are too fearful of angering older voters. Yet Mika Brzezinski believes another constituency are to blame: white male top earners.
“I just don’t understand why with top earners doing better than ever, why they can’t be a part of this equation. . . . And if you looked at the New York Times yesterday, and you saw the top 30 earners, and how much money they are making all over again, including some of the people who drove us into the ditch – all white men, by the way, just one woman – and I didn’t see any African-Americans – I think we have a problem that we need to address as a society.”
Scarborough joked whether the problem was white men generally, but Brzezinski clarified that she was focusing on the wealth part of her description. She suggested things need to be balanced out, otherwise “you’re going to have class warfare on its worst level.” At least one person was convinced, as Mike Barnicle chimed in that it was time for Obama to declare that taxes on Americans earning over $250,000 will be raised.
