NBC’s Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager Talk Megyn Kelly ‘Blackface’ Controversy: ‘It Was Horrifying’

NBC’s war against its $69 million host continues…

The Today show’s Hoda Kotb and NBC correspondent Jenna Bush Hager are set to appear on E! News at 7 p.m. Friday night to dish on the fallout from Megyn Kelly‘s controversial “blackface” comments earlier this week.

Hager was on the Megyn Kelly Today panel when Kelly asked why blackface in Halloween costumes was considered out of bounds.

“But what is racist?” Kelly asked. “Because…you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was OK as long as you were dressing up as like a character.”

Hager and Kotb spoke out about the moment to E! News, which released a preview clip of their interview.

“It was horrifying, because it wasn’t what we were there to talk about,” Hager said. “And obviously, in this day and age, but in any day and age, when there’s talk of something that would make somebody feel bad, it’s not something we stand for ever. Not then, not now. And it made me sad.”

“Well we don’t really know what is ahead for her now,” Kotb added. “We don’t really know what the outcome of this is going to be.”

Since making those comments Kelly’s fall at the network has been rapid. She was criticized by her colleagues on air, and condemned by network chief Andy Lack in a private town hall with network staff. On Friday, NBC announced her show was cancelled, as they work out an exit deal for the host that joined the network a little more than a year ago.
