Obama Responds to Heckler Who Claims Trump Wears Diapers: ‘I Almost Said That’

Former President Barack Obama stumped for Vice President Kamala Harris in Pittsburgh on Thursday, where he all but invited a wisecrack about former President Donald Trump.

Polls in key swing states such as Pennsylvania remain tight, and Trump’s numbers have improved in recent weeks. The Harris campaign is hoping Obama can help turn out votes in the states she needs to win to vault into the White House.

During his remarks, Obama touted Harris’s proposal to give parents of newborns a $6,000 child tax credit. The amount goes well beyond the $3,600 per-child credit families received under the American Rescue Plan.

“So, if you’re a new parent, you could qualify for a $6,000 tax credit during the first year of your child’s life,” the former president told the crowd. “Because, I don’t have to tell a lot of you, raising kids is hard. And she wants to make it easier to afford stuff like a crib, or a car seat, or diapers.”

Obama then recalled buying diapers for the first time as a new parent and ended up reacting to a joke about Trump:

OBAMA: I remember buying diapers. I remember the first time I went into the store right after Malia was born. I was like, “What? That’s how much diapers cost?” I remember changing diapers. Do you think Donald Trump ever changed a diaper?

HECKLER: No! No chance.

[LAUGHTER]

HECKLER: His own!

OBAMA: I almost said that, but I decided I shouldn’t say it.

[LAUGHTER]

Obama has made several digs against the 78-year-old former president over the years. More recently, at the Democratic National Convention, he joked about Trump’s obsession with crowd sizes.

“It has been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s actually been getting worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala,” he said. “There’s the childish nicknames, the crazy conspiracy theories, this weird obsession with crowd sizes.”

As he spoke, Obama held up his hands and moved them closer to one another, as if to suggest that Trump’s fixation on “size” is not confined to crowds.
