RFK Jr. Floats Running With Libertarian Party to Get On Ballots In All 50 States: ‘That’s Something We’re Looking At’
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. floated the possibility of running with the Libertarian party as his independent candidacy has stagnated in polling for the 2024 general election.
According to Reuters poll taken between January 22th and January 24th, Kennedy received 8% support from voters while former President Donald Trump led the field at 39% against President Joe Biden with 34%. However, a Harvard CAPS-Harris poll released earlier this week showed Kennedy at 18% support, but still well behind Trump with 41% and Biden at 33%.
However, other polls indicate that his poll numbers increase in key swing states if RFK Jr. manages to get his name on all 50 state ballots. During a CNN interview on Saturday, anchor Michael Smerconish asked Kennedy if he was considering running with the Libertarian party in order to get his name on more ballots.
SMERCONISH: Is it? Is it possible that you will seek as you are running as an independent, you will seek still to be the libertarian candidate, which would assure you getting on all 50 state ballots.
KENNEDY: That is something that we’re looking at. We have a really good, relationship with the Libertarian Party. I’m going to be speaking at the California Libertarian Party convention. I think it’s next week or maybe in a couple of weeks. And, we’re we’re talking about me talking. I’m, speaking in New York, but, you know…And then we have our own political party now in six states, which have rules that make that give us an advantage to have our own political party.
Smerconish then play audio from Libertarian party chair Angela McArdle, where she praised his candidacy and appeared to welcome RFK Jr. as their potential nominee.
“Yeah, well, we are talking to the Libertarian Party, and I feel very comfortable with, with most of the values Libertarian Party,” RFK Jr. responded. “We have good relationships. I’m talking regularly to libertarian groups. So we’ll continue to do those talks.”
Back in October, RFK Jr. abandoned running for the Democratic nomination, shifting his presidential campaign so he can be an independent candidate.
