Florida gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis, who officially clinched the GOP nomination Tuesday night, appeared on The Ingraham Angle and is already taking aim at his Democratic opponent.
DeSantis’s primary campaign picked up a ton of momentum after receiving the endorsement of President Donald Trump, helping him earn 56.5% of the vote against Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam.
Now, he’ll be facing off against Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who received the endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
The congressman didn’t wait to lob attacks against the progressive candidate, calling him “the most liberal candidate” the Democratic Party has ever nominated in the governor race the state of Florida.
“He wants to abolish ICE. He wants a billion-dollar tax increase. He wants a single-payer healthcare system in Florida, which would bankrupt the state,” DeSantis told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. “I’m trying to make Florida even better, he’s trying to make Florida Venezuela.”
DeSantis also blasted Gillum’s “disastrous tenure” as the Tallahassee mayor, accusing him of being “embroiled in a lot of corruption scandals” as well as blaming him for the rising crime in the city.
He also dismissed the congratulatory tweet from progressive candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Gillum, adding that there are people in Florida “who have fled socialist countries like Cuba and Venezuela” and that they don’t want that “imported into Florida.”
