Steve Scalise Says He Hasn’t Forgiven Man Who Shot Him: ‘I’m Not There Yet’
Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) admitted that he is not ready to forgive the gunman who shot him while he and other congressmen practiced at an Alexandria, Virginia baseball field last year, telling Fox News host Neil Cavuto “I’m not there yet.”
“This is a personal issue. I mean, you know, as a Catholic, I believe in forgiveness. You know, no one has asked me for forgiveness, obviously, he can’t,” the out going House Majority Whip said on Fox News today. “I still have a lot of work to do in my recovery and it takes a lot of energy to resolve an issue like this.”
Scalise continued:
“I’m admitting — this is one of those flaws that I, you know, that I’m going to have to grapple with as a Catholic. Hopefully I get it resolved working with my priest and working, you know, to make sure that I can finally get to a place where I deal with that the proper way. I’m not there yet. I admit that.”
The Louisiana lawmaker added “at some point I will confront it,” but explained that he has much more pressing issues to focus on during his recovery process.
“There will be a time to deal with forgiveness and I hope I can be the bigger man,” he concluded. “And that’s where my faith, you know, and the people that I’m going to rely on will come in.”
In June 2017, as Scalise and several other lawmakers held an early morning baseball practice in preparation for the annual congressional game, a politically motivated gunman opened fire on the field. Scalise and several other people were shot, but none of the victims were killed and the perpetrator died after taking fire from law enforcement.
