TBT: Here Is a Fresh-Faced Wolf Blitzer Passionately Defending Israel at a 1980s Debate
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, long before he infamously lost on Jeopardy! to a comedian, was once a serious advocate for the rights of Israel. This was back in the halcyon days of the 1980s when the sports cars were red and the action stars were muscular.
Blitzer appeared during a debate with Norman G. Finkelstein in 1989, back when the Situation Room was just a twinkle in his eye. Blitzer, after all, started his career as the Washington correspondent for The Jerusalem Post, moving on to contribute pieces to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) before being hired by CNN in 1990. Wow. He’s been at the network for nearly 30 years.
Here is what he had to say about Israel, as it pertains to sovereignty and its many squabbles with neighboring Palestine.
“Look, we can go back and we can argue over the birth of Israel,” he said, proving that though his beard may have grayed in the following years, his tone has remained ever-dulcet.
“We can argue over whether or not there should be an Israel. There is an Israel today. There’s a strong Israel today, a vibrant Israel, that is not going to disappear.”
Watch the fierce debate above.
