‘The League Is Very Lesbian And She’s Not’: Bill Maher Slams Caitlin Clark WNBA Teammates Being ‘Catty’ And Not Defending Her
Comic and pundit Bill Maher criticized teammates of rookie WNBA player Caitlin Clark for not having her back on the court, saying that “women are catty,” the league is “very lesbian,” and that race could be a factor as well.
During a Friday airing of Real Time, Maher played a clip of Clark being shoved to ground last weekend by Chicago Sky athlete Chennedy Carter. He then pointed out that Clark’s nearby teammate on the Indiana Fever did not rush over to help her get up.
The late-night host claimed that athletes would be more likely to “defend each other” and “men will fight from two team” while “only women would do this.”
“See if this was men, they’d defend each other on their same team,” Maher told his panel. “I mean, men will fight from two teams, but when somebody checks you on who’s on your team, you defend that guy. I’m just saying men have their bad parts. We’re toxic. We’re dogs. Only women would do this.”
“Women are catty,” he added. “Even the ones on your own team.” Maher then went on to quote former NBA athlete Matt Barnes who said, “My issue and my question is, where the f*ck are her teammates at? I’ve seen a couple of girls smirk when she’s got knocked down, half-ass to pick her up. You guys are supposed to be a family. It’s your guys’ f*cking job to have her back, and to have each others’ backs.”
Panel member and journalist Abigail Shrier called out the couching staff of Clark’s team by suggesting they need to pressure players to defend Clark or threaten to bench them if they don’t.
Maher responded by highlighting there is a “racial element to this” and noted, “It’s not always racism when a White person succeeds.”
Reason Magazine editor-at-large Matt Welch argued against Maher’s point by adding, “It’s not always racism when Black people hip-check them either.”
“It’s everything,” Maher concluded in his response. “It’s women are catty, the league is very lesbian and she’s not, and there’s race. There’s a lot going on.”
