Trump Says He’d Welcome a Challenge From Obama for Unconstitutional Third Term: ‘Would Be a Good One’

President Donald Trump said a campaign against former President Barack Obama “would be a good one” if the two somehow square off to secure an unconstitutional third term as president.

Trump and some of his allies have floated a Trump 2028 campaign.

“We’re working on it,” Steve Bannon said this month. “I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives, let’s say that. We’ll see what the definition of term limit is.”

On Sunday, the president himself suggested he could run again.

“You know, a lot of people would like me to do that,” Trump said on Sunday. “There are, there are methods which you could do it, as you know.”

The 22nd Amendment states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

On Monday, Trump took questions from reporters in the Oval Office while flanked by Kid Rock. Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Peter Doocy asked Trump about running again.

“If you are allowed – for some reason – to run for a third term, is there a thought that the Democrats could try to run Barack Obama against you?” Doocy asked.

“I’d love that,” the president replied. “That would be a good one. I’d like that. No, people are asking me to run. And there’s a whole story about running for a third term. I don’t know. I never looked into it. They do say there’s a way you can do it, but I don’t know about that. But I have not looked into it.”

Only Franklin Roosevelt served more than two terms as president, having won four presidential elections from 1932 to 1944 – before the 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951. Until then, it was customary for two-term presidents to decline to run again as George Washington did when he chose not to run for a third term in 1796.

Repealing the 22nd Amendment would require the approval of two-thirds of both houses of Congress and three-fourths of the states.
