WATCH LIVE: Sarah Huckabee Sanders Holds First White House Press Briefing in 42 Days
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will hold a rare press briefing at the White House today, her first in 42 days. The event is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
Sanders will be joined by Office of Management and Budget Acting Director Russell Vought, which means the briefing is likely to gravitate around President Donald Trump‘s pursuit of funding for a southern border wall. Reuters reported over the weekend that Trump intends to ask Congress to allocate $8.6 billion for the wall’s construction in the 2020 spending budget.
The news comes after Trump caused a government shutdown, then declared a national emergency when he couldn’t get the border security funding he was looking for. Vought could be asked what the White House will do if Trump’s request is shot down in Congress, and if bipartisan Congressional objection leads to the president’s emergency declaration being blocked.
When Sanders takes her turn at the podium, it’s possible that Sanders will be asked about The New Yorker‘s profile the relationship between Fox News and the White House. Jane Mayer made waves last week with a deep dive into the feedback loop and policy-making process stemming from Trump’s chumminess with the network’s opinion hosts. This could also connect to questions about Bill Shine, the former co-president of Fox News, who just left his position as White House communications director for a job with the Trump 2020 re-election campaign.
Other topics that might come up include Trump’s calling Democrats the “anti-Jewish party,” Paul Manafort‘s sentencing, and the president’s slams of former allies Ann Coulter and Michael Cohen.
