David Cameron Snubs Manchester United Analogy, Touts Rishi Sunak As Arsenal-Slaying Villa Manager Unai Emery
Foreign Minister Lord David Cameron said that “anything is possible in football as in politics” and, dismissing LBC host Nick Ferrari’s Manchester United analogy, described Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, who led the team to victory against Premiership leaders Arsenal on Sunday.
The former prime minister was appearing on LBC on Monday, during the press rounds, when Ferrari compared Sunak to current Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and Cameron to the club’s longest serving and best known manager Alex Ferguson, for having pulled off “some remarkable victories in the past.”
Ferrari began: “There is a general election looming and if Rishi Sunak is the Eric Ten Haag for Manchester United, you are clearly the Alex Ferguson who’s pulled off some remarkable victories in the past. What advice would you give to the current manager?”
Smiling, Cameron responded: “Well, I prefer to point to the example of Unai Emery for Villa yesterday, who, you know, looked like they were on a losing run against Arsenal and in the last few minutes slotted in two. So anything is possible in football as in politics.”
On Sunday Aston Villa defeated Arsenal 2-0 in a surprise late game victory that pushed Arsenal from the top of the table, where a three way chase for the title continues.
He continued, emphasising his support for Sunak: “I will be doing everything I can to help Prime Minister Sunak. He’s a very good boss to have. He’s the brightest person in the room, a brain the size of a planet, works incredibly hard, doing good things for this country at a difficult time.”
He added: “You know, inflation’s coming down, interest rates will be falling, taxes are coming down. We’ve got a plan, the other lot haven’t, and I can’t wait to get on the campaign trail, but I’ll wait until the election’s called because I don’t know when it’s going to be.”
