Unsealed court documents related to late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein name Prince Andrew and allege his involvement in sexual abuse of “numerous” minors on multiple occasions.
The released trove contains over 150 previously anonymised names of Epstein’s associates, friends, and victims. In December New York Judge Loretta Preska placed an order to unseal documents from a 2015 defamation lawsuit involving Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell and his victim Virginia Giuffre.
The documents include an account from Johanna Sjoberg, alleging the Duke of York sexual abused her in Epstein’s Manhattan apartment in 2001. The scene involved Epstein and Maxwell presenting Prince Andrew with a puppet, apparently from satirical BBC show Spitting Image.
“It looked like him,” Sjoberg said. “And she brought it down and presented it to him; and that was a great joke, because apparently it was a production from a show on BBC.”
She continued: “And they decided to take a picture with it, in which Virginia and Andrew sat on a couch. They put the puppet on Virginia’s lap, and I sat on Andrew’s lap, and they put the puppet’s hand on Virginia’s breast, and Andrew put his hand on my breast, and they took a photo.”
Another exhibit allege one victim, named as Jane Doe #3 was “forced to have sexual relations with this Prince when she was a minor in three separate geographical locations: in London (at Ghislaine Maxwell’s apartment), in New York, and on Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands (in an orgy with numerous other under-aged girls).”
According to the document, Epstein told her to “give the Prince whatever he demanded and required Jane Doe #3 to report back to him on the details of the sexual abuse.”
Despite Buckingham Palace’s previous denial of all accusations against Andrew as “categorically untrue,” the release has cast renewed criticism.
Maxwell, currently serving a 20-year sentence for her role in Epstein’s sex trafficking crimes, said she was concerned about “more questions” regarding her relationship to [former US President Bill] Clinton and “Andrew” in a 2015 email to her attorney, as per the unsealed exhibits.
The unsealing of these files does not imply guilt or awareness of Epstein’s misdeeds for all of those named. However, the decision to release the names has been based partly on the individuals’ previous media interviews, including Sjoberg’s.
Prince Andrew, already distanced from the royal family and having settled a civil sexual assault case with Giuffre, faces renewed public scrutiny. He continues to deny any wrongdoing.
