Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has gone viral on TikTok following a disastrous video transition attempt that has now turned him into a meme.
In the original video, shared online by the Conservative Party, Sunak announced a £20 million government grant for enhancements in Blyth’s high street and investing in crime reduction.
The grant was announced to reassure northern voters that they were at the forefront of the government’s spending plans after the Prime Minister’s contentious decision to cancel the HS2 leg to Manchester last week.
“If you live in or around Blyth, you’re going to want to hear this,” Sunak begins before slapping the camera with his palm.
As he raises his hand away he continues: “We’re giving your town £20 million to improve things like the high street, safety and community heritage.”
Tiktok users seized on the clunky transition attempt which has become a viral meme on the platform, counting millions of views.
Some users, acting as if they’ve been dropped in front of camera unexpectedly, are using the transition to switch away from Sunak’s intended talking point to something entirely different:

One user takes the opportunity to flag Sunak’s recently expressed anti-trans views:
@trickywentz #stitch with @CramlingtonNews this 1s for my lgbts 🫣😝 #fyp #foryou #rishisunak #transrights #lgbt #ew #shutup
Others have a little more fun:
@samd_official I will get revenge ☹️ #capcut #rishisunak #blythe #fyp #eastenders
Sunak hinted he was planning to ban the Chinese platform earlier this year but will be glad he didn’t, now that he’s a star.
The internet, it goes without saying, remains undefeated.
