In a fitting tribute to Groundhog Day, Sky Cinema Comedy has revived it’s annual gag by scheduling the Bill Murray-starring 1993 romcom Groundhog Day to air a whopping 13 times consecutively.

In the movie Murray played weatherman Phil Connors, who finds himself stuck in a never-ending time loop, reliving the same day, February 2nd, repeatedly.

Sky Cinema Comedy’s decision to air the film in loop is a nod both to the film’s storyline, where the protagonist experiences the same day over and over.

The channel’s unique celebration coincides with the date in the film and the North American holiday, where the emergence of a groundhog from its burrow is seen as an indicator of the seasonal change in weather. According to myth, clear weather means six more weeks of winter, while cloudy skies herald an early spring.

Viewers seemed charmed by the channel’s commitment to the gag.

Sky meanwhile has promised to keep up the tradition alive for “for as long as the earth’s still turning.”
